Vintage Baluch Rugs in the Shop

Are you looking for that special rug to finish off your perfect space? Or perhaps you are looking for an inspiration to make your space something special. One of these rugs could be it. They are vintage Balusch rugs, which were hand crafted by Baluch nomads (in the Afghanistan, Iran and Pakistan area) approximately 30-60 years ago using vegetable dyes.

This landscape scene rug has beautiful shades of orange, blue, red and purple. It would also look great as a wall hanging.

I love the edges of this one, which has earthy tones of brown, yellow and red.

I love the shades of blue and pink in this one. 

This last one has wonderful shades of blue and green, with just enough pops of yellow and pink to make it interesting.

The Market East Pillow Collection

I've been selling them at my pop-up shop and at clover market, and posting about them on instragram and facebook, but haven't dedicated a post to them yet.

So here they are, the Market East Pillows!!




I designed the fabric and it printed through Spoonflower. Spoonflower is the greatest invention. You upload your design and pick the repeat type and voila, they print it for you. It's the coolest thing ever.

I used a photo that I took of the Market East train station in Philadelphia. Currently the station name is actually Jefferson station, but I seriously hate when buildings are renamed, so I will forever call it Market East. Anyway, the station has a two huge walls of tiles that from far away you can tell are trees, but from most vantage points they just look like random angled subway tiles. I took a photo and did a mirror repeat to make a this cool design.

This pillow was made with a full piece of the fabric on the front. The rest are a patchwork style. 

The quilting lines follow the lines of the tile at some points, then veer off at others.

Here is a little summary of the process. Not included is me struggling and struggling to sew invisible zippers! Sometimes they are really easy, and other times they are very, very hard.

First I chose some fabrics from my stash that coordinated with the fabric. A personal favorite is the shot cotton. It is a woven blend of two very similar shades of the same color, which gives it depth.

 The first cut. 

In the middle of this I had to move the sewing area to our living room while we were re-doing the flooring. The flooring needs it's own blog post, which I will do as soon as I get some decent photos of the room. Anyway, having the whole dining room to myself was great! It has giant windows on each end, which was lovely.

I started out making a big square. As you can see, this was in the spring :-) My method is to just work by adding rectangular pieces of fabric. It's an organic process and I don't use any patterns or have a real plan besides try to balance out the colors. Little bit of this, little bit of that and then it's complete. 

Then I cut the large shape into separate squares and added fabric as needed to make each the correct size for the pillow form. This gave each of them a different and distinct look, as compared to the modified log pattern that I started with. 

Then each was made into a pillow. I still have two left in the shop, so grab them while they last! I have a smidge more fabric left so there may be a few more in the future. But each one will be unique.

By now, I am sure that you have most likely heard of a CSA, which stands for community sponsored agriculture. Typically they are for farms and you can pay to get a variety of veggies over the season. But did you know they have them for flowers too? Yes, it's true. The one I signed up for is at Love 'n Fresh Flowers, which is a flower farm in Philadelphia.


I signed up for the bucket share, which you see below. You can also choose to get an arrangement already made, but by now you should know how much I love to arrange flowers.

The first arrangement I made was in this awesome pottery bowl. And, ahem, it's for sale in the brand*eye shop! As instructed by me before, you want to start with making a base for the flowers. I used the filler that was included to give a foundation for the flowers to sit in. Then I added the blue flowers and yellow flowers. I wish I knew the names of them for you, but unfortunately I do not.

your fall table-milk glass

Previously I posted some inspiration for decorating your Thanksgiving table - aka tablescape - using brass and leaves. Today I am providing you with some inspiration using milk glass.

I have paired some milk glass pieces from my collection, and from the brand*eye home shop to create a unique scene. This is definitely not the typical orange and eath tone thanksgiving table. It is inspired by the purple vintage glasses, which happened to pair perfectly with the cut coleus from my garden. I used the vintage milk glass vases and filled them with coleus. This arrangement would work with any cut flower or mixture of flowers. You can find a post on cutting your coleus here-extending the lives of coleus.



Ingredients:

• milk glass! here is a vintage footed hobnail lidded compote (that is a mouthful), and here is a set of vintage milk glass vases from the brand*eye home shop.

• vintage purple glasses- just use that search term on etsy or ebay and you will find a bunch of awesomeness
• plates from crate and barrel: this is a similar set
• vintage silver ware
• vintage linen napkins

I didn't use any base for this arrangement, but this would look even better with the scattering of leaves down the center like the brass example.

your fall table - leaves and brass

I don't know about you, but I love to create, enjoy and just appreciate a beautiful and delicious meal. If you're lucky enough to host Thanksgiving Dinner, here are some ideas to decorate your table. And I mainly say lucky, because I have a husband who does 90% of the cooking and is REALLY good at it. All I have to do is decorate and make a dessert or two.



Here is the first installment of a tablescape. That is the worst word, but a tiny part of me likes it. You can create any great "scape" really, with just a few great pieces and some imagination and creativity.

New to the brand*eye shop: pillows! This first collection is made with a vintage yellow fabric which has a great texture to it. A couple of them have been embellished with doilies to make them one of a kind. They are handmade for brand*eye by a lovely lady who lives in Ambler, PA. I met her about 12 years ago when she did the alterations to my wedding dress. Wow, I am getting old.

I have slowly been stocking up the new and improved brand*eye etsy shop. Here are a couple of new pieces.

This vintage Hull planter works great store anything. It worked especially well to hold make-up brushes.  

 

 

 

This is a super cute planter that would work for storage. And of course as all planters do, would work as a planter. :-)



 

And this basket is super rad. It looks teeny tiny in this pic, because this plant is huge. It is on the smaller side, but has a hook for hanging and would look divine mixed with some other art work and objects.

 

 

This vintage wall hanging is my favorite. It is a linen screen printed panel of the Chrysler Building in NYC. I contemplated keeping it, but I am already keeping the only other very cool thing that I found that day (a brass vintage star burst planter).

 

 

re-opened brand*eye esty shop

I have been thinking about re-opening the brand*eye etsy shop for some time now and finally decided to just do it. I have some big plans for it, but am starting small and with just some vintage that I have found over the years. Look for more vintage awesomeness to be added soon!!

front page news

well not exactly front page real news, but yesterday at 2pm a brandeye etsy item made it to the front page. i checked my activity feed on etsy this morning and noticed that i had a TON of new "hearts" on this vintage bitters bottle, as well as new "hearts" for my shop. so i headed over to heart-o-matic on craftcult and sure enough, front page. how exciting :-)
